At Horizons Academy, we believe education is about more than lessons. Our role is to help pupils grow into confident, resilient young people who are ready for adult life. Personal development and enrichment sit alongside academic learning to ensure every pupil has the chance to flourish.

Our intent

We want every pupil to:

  • Develop resilience, confidence, and self-belief
  • Experience a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom
  • Learn how to look after their physical and mental wellbeing
  • Explore their interests and talents, and discover new ones
  • Be prepared for life in a diverse, modern society

Our implementation

PSHE and wellbeing

  • We use the Jigsaw PSHE programme, covering relationships, health, online safety, equality, and personal goals
  • Mental health and wellbeing are prioritised with trusted adults, safe spaces, and therapeutic support

SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural) development

  • Pupils learn about different values, beliefs, and cultures through RE, assemblies, and enrichment days
  • Respect, kindness, and tolerance are modelled and celebrated across school life

Enrichment opportunities

  • Sport – inclusive activities such as boccia, sitting volleyball, football, swimming, dance, and outdoor pursuits
  • Creative arts – art, music, drama, and vocational tasters where pupils can express themselves and build confidence
  • Outdoor and adventurous learning – orienteering, team-building challenges, and nature exploration.
  • Cultural experiences – trips, workshops, and themed enrichment days that bring learning to life

Leadership and responsibility

  • Pupil voice through council, class discussions, and school projects
  • Opportunities to take leadership roles in charity work, events, and mentoring peers

Careers and preparation for adulthood

  • Enrichment links closely to careers education, including volunteering, work experience, and independent living skills such as travel training and money management

Our impact

We know personal development and enrichment are successful when:

  • Pupils show greater confidence, self-esteem, and resilience
  • Engagement in lessons and attendance improve
  • Pupils demonstrate the Horizons’ habits (be respectful, be brave, be resilient, build relationships) in daily life
  • Families notice positive changes in behaviour, relationships, and motivation
  • Pupils leave Horizons Academy with the skills and experiences needed for adulthood

Why this matters?

For our pupils, enrichment and personal development are not “extras”, they are central to building resilience, self-belief, and independence. By the time they leave Horizons Academy, every young person will have had the chance to explore their interests, celebrate their talents, and prepare confidently for adult life.
