Following the offer of a place by the Integrated Children’s Disability Service (ICDS), we will put in place a personalised transition plan for your child.

Before your child joins us

We understand that moving to a new school is a significant step for any child, and that some students may need a longer or more carefully supported transition than others. At Horizons Academy, transition is planned around the individual needs of each student, with a strong focus on helping them feel safe, understood and ready to join our school community.

Our aim is to create a sense of stability from the very beginning. We know that when students feel secure, supported and understood, they are more able to build relationships, engage with learning and begin to feel a sense of belonging.

As part of this process, we will work closely with families, the student’s current setting, and any other professionals involved, where appropriate. This helps us build a clear understanding of the student’s educational, social and emotional needs.

Where possible, members of the Horizons team, including the student’s teacher and key support staff, will spend time getting to know the student before they start. This may take place in their current school, alternative setting, or at home, depending on the student’s circumstances. The aim is to begin building positive relationships before the student joins us.

Students will then be supported to visit Horizons Academy and become familiar with the school environment, staff and routines. They may also spend time with the peer group they are likely to join, where appropriate. Visits will usually increase gradually in length and frequency as the transition progresses, helping the student build confidence, trust and stability over time.

When your child joins us

When your child starts at Horizons Academy, staff will continue to focus on helping them feel settled, safe and supported. We recognise that successful transition is not just about accessing learning, but also about supporting emotional wellbeing, social development and a sense of belonging.

During the early weeks, staff will get to know your child’s strengths, needs, interests and learning profile. This will help us plan appropriate support and ensure that their provision reflects the outcomes and needs identified in their EHCP. Our priority is to create consistent routines, trusted relationships and a stable environment where each student can begin to thrive.

Within the first term

A new starter meeting will be arranged with families to discuss how your child is settling in. This provides an opportunity to talk about what is working well, any areas where further support may be needed, and the next steps in your child’s education and personal development.

At Horizons Academy, our aim is for transition to be calm, nurturing and carefully planned, so that each student experiences stability and has the best possible start with us.
