Education for students not attending full time
At Horizons Academy, we recognise that some students may not always be able to attend school on a full-time basis. This may be because they are on a part-time timetable, are transitioning into school, or are being educated off-site for a period of time.
Where this is the case, we will ensure that appropriate support is in place so that students continue to access learning, maintain relationships with staff, and work towards increased engagement where this is appropriate.
Students on a part-time timetable
Where a student is on a part-time timetable, work will be sent home for the sessions or days when they are not in school. This work will be planned at an appropriate level and linked, where possible, to the learning taking place in class.
We understand that some students may find it difficult to complete schoolwork at home. Home learning is therefore offered as part of a supportive approach, with the aim of helping students maintain routine, continue learning and stay connected to school.
Students educated off-site
Where a student is being educated off-site, two members of staff will support them at agreed times, in appropriate and safe spaces. This support will be planned around the individual needs of the student.
The work completed during these sessions may include:
- academic learning;
- preparation for returning to school;
- work linked to EHCP outcomes;
- activities to build confidence, trust and engagement;
- support to help the student feel safe, settled and ready to learn;
- work to develop routines, communication and positive relationships with staff.
For some students, the initial focus may be on building emotional security, stability and a sense of safety before they are ready to engage fully in academic learning. This is an important part of helping students move towards more consistent access to education.
Our approach
All arrangements will be reviewed regularly and adapted according to the student’s needs, progress and circumstances. We will work closely with families, professionals and the student themselves, where appropriate, to ensure that the support remains meaningful and effective.
Our aim is always to provide a calm, nurturing and supportive approach that helps students feel connected to Horizons Academy and able to access education in a way that is safe, purposeful and appropriate for them.
